Water safety for children in warm weather

As the weather gets warmer, many families spend more time around water. This can increase the risk of accidents, especially for young children and teenagers.

Simple steps can help keep children safe:

  • Always supervise children closely around water, including in the bath
  • Never leave a child alone in the bath, even for a moment
  • Be careful when using bath seats, as they are not safety devices
  • Take extra care near rivers, lakes and the sea
  • Talk to older children and teenagers about risks around open water

National data shows that younger children and teenagers are most at risk. Most drownings happen quickly and quietly, so close supervision is vital.
